Group Prenatal Program

MOTHERgold™ is a group prenatal care program available only here in Redding, CA at Selah Women’s Health. This program has been meticulously designed to meet the needs of women and their families who are longing for a pregnancy and birth experience that combines excellent medical care with deep-hearted honor for the emotional and spiritual needs and values of individual families.

MOTHERgold is built on the belief that the healthiest mom and baby will be those whose physical, emotional, and spiritual needs are cared for simultaneously. We also believe that emotional and spiritual needs are best met through developing community within shared experience. Because of this, nearly half the care in MOTHERgold is delivered in a group setting.

Here, families expecting in the same month interact with each other and with experienced nurses and providers to learn, grow, and restore health together.

Congratulations!

Thanks for visiting our site! We’re excited for you and would be honored to partner with you during your pregnancy to help create a safe and celebratory birthing experience.

WHAT

What is MOTHERgold?

Peace…Together

MOTHERgold™ is a cutting-edge prenatal care program available only here in Redding, CA at Selah Women’s Health. Dr. Kang has led the Selah team in the creation of a new curriculum and care philosophy at Selah. This has been designed to meet the needs of women and their families who are longing for a pregnancy and birth experience that combines excellent medical care with deep-hearted honor for the emotional and spiritual needs and values of individual families.

It is built on the belief that the healthiest mom and baby will be those whose physical, emotional, and spiritual needs are cared for simultaneously. We also believe that emotional and spiritual needs are best met through developing community within shared experience.

Because of this, nearly half the care in MOTHERgold is delivered in a group setting. Here, families expecting in the same month interact with each other and with experienced nurses and providers to learn, grow, and restore health together.

WHY

Why MOTHERgold?

Free & Celebrated

Because bringing a baby into the world is still one of the single most significant events in a family’s experience. It deserves to be free of fear, full of peace, and remembered forever as amazing as it really is.

Our approach to prenatal care allows us to share our birth philosophy with you, provide you with the tools you need to reach these goals, and establish the trust required to navigate the birth process with these goals in mind.

HOW

How does it work?

MOTHERgold Works

In MOTHERgold™, you will initiate your prenatal care with several individual visits with our providers. At these visits, you will receive an ultrasound, get routine screening labs ordered, and undergo a physical exam.

Beginning at 14 weeks, you will have 6 monthly visits that incorporate group learning and interaction. These sessions typically last a total of 90 minutes once a month. Although spouses, doulas, and adult family members are welcomed in these sessions, families are requested to arrange childcare for their other children so that they can fully focus on getting the most out of the groups.

Our providers and highly experienced OB nurses team up to bring a wide range of health topics to the group sessions, and to provide women and their significant others with intensive support to be their healthiest.

After 35 weeks, our patients are seen weekly in individual visits with providers until they deliver. After delivery, an additional group session meets to celebrate the new arrivals together and solidify support around breastfeeding and parenting needs.

It is fun to watch how many significant relationships form through these groups, leading to ongoing play groups and supportive friendships for growing families.

BENEFITS

What are the benefits?

Excellent Care…Together

Group prenatal care has been offered in many places throughout the world, and has demonstrated significant reductions in poor pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm labor, small-for-gestational-age babies, and Cesarean delivery rates. In fact, one study showed that the more group prenatal care sessions a woman attended, the lower the risk for birth complications. This type of care has also been shown to positively affect women after birth as well, including higher rates of successful breastfeeding and lower rates of postpartum depression.

MOTHERgold™ builds on the success of other group prenatal care ideas, but is also different because we incorporate our unique Selah approach to health and wellness. Here we give value and care to the emotional and spiritual determinants of health as well as providing the physical care that is traditionally focused on in prenatal care.

We continue to maintain high standards of care, and women can expect to be offered all of the familiar components of prenatal care including laboratory testing, ultrasound evaluation, and pregnancy complication screening. In addition, we also teach families to recognize and manage emotional and spiritual health, which directly contributes to physical effects on their bodies through the release and interaction of stress hormones.

REGISTRATION

How do I register?

Your first step is to become a patient at Selah Women’s Health. Depending on your insurance payor, we may need to receive a referral or authorization from your primary care provider.

When you call, please be prepared to share with us your complete insurance information (including secondary payors) and the date of your last menstrual period. We will ask you to complete a new patient intake online prior to scheduling your first appointment date.

Due to MOTHERgold™ popularity, the limited spaces do fill up rapidly, so we encourage you to call as soon as you know that you are pregnant.

COST

What is the cost?

MOTHERgold™ at Selah Women’s Health is provided at the same cost as traditional prenatal care because of our desire to love our community well. This is remarkable, as the time you get to spend with your provider and the multidisciplinary team is increased significantly.

Through the help of dedicated volunteers and grant funding, we have been able to offer our enhanced services and supports without an increase in cost to our patients or their insurance carriers. Patients who access medical services through private or public payer programs will still have the same access to care in MOTHERgold. Our program participates with all major insurance carriers, as well as Medi-Cal, Partnership, and MediCare.

We also directly weave in content that would normally be found in separate birthing classes, which can sometimes cost as much as $500. This results in significant financial savings to families overall.

NEW THINGS

I’m not sure about new things…

The MOTHERgold™ program is exclusively found at Selah Women’s Health. Because of our huge investment of time and resources into this program, we have focused all of our prenatal care here and no longer offer traditional prenatal care schedules.

We understand if you are not sure that this type of care will fit you and your family. As this program has developed, we have heard similar concerns from other patients. We encourage you to trial a group setting at least once before making your decision, as we have found that for so many women, the experience speaks for itself.

Our mothers eagerly anticipate each group session and leave feeling so empowered, refreshed, and supported. We would love to give you the opportunity to sample our approach as an observer. To apply, please call (530) 338-0002 or contact us using the form below.

SPIRITUAL HEALTH

What do you mean by spiritual health?

MOTHERgold™ is not a religious program, nor do we promote a particular religious viewpoint in spiritual care. We believe a person’s spirit is that part of them that is timeless and confers their identity.

We also believe that connecting deeply with other people and with God requires a spirit that is alive and healthy. We understand how different this can be from person to person and culture to culture.

Our desire is to provide a space where patients are able to recognize how their spiritual health affects their overall health and the health of their families. In our group sessions, we create opportunities for our patients to experience spiritual connection and peace, which we believe will ultimately grow their individual and family identity in positive ways.

HIGH-RISK

But I’m considered high-risk…

MOTHERgold™ care works well for both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies. Our providers have particular passion to ensure that the same goals of reducing fear and increasing peace are available to high-risk moms as well.

For our patients who have factors that make their pregnancies more medically complicated, we customize additional individual appointments with providers throughout the pregnancy to ensure that these issues are adequately monitored. Additional needs for fetal monitoring are administered according to standard-of-care guidelines by the same nurses and providers who care for all our MOTHERgold patients.

TRANSFER

What about transferring care?

It is sometimes possible to transfer your prenatal care and join our MOTHERgold™ program, particularly if you are relocating to our area. We will request a copy of your prenatal records to be reviewed by our medical director prior to granting approval.

If you are considering transferring your care from another provider, we encourage you to observe in a group session at least once before making your decision. We would encourage you to try to “catch up” by attending groups more frequently as each of our 6 group sessions present content we feel is essential to your pregnancy and birth experience.
